A PROJECT
for Sponsoring Needy Students in Their Education
from Primary to University
Primary School
Our Scholarship Fund supports students in kindergarten & primary school, grades 1-6. Most of these children remain in their home-villages, and attend the nearby government (or occasionally Church) school. The children are almost entirely from the different ethnic minorities in northern Thailand: Karen, Hmong, Akha, Lahu.
Secondary School
Our Scholarship Fund supports students in secondary school, in both junior high school (levels 1-3), and in senior high school (levels 4-6). The majority of these students have been with our program from primary school. Most of these students enroll in the nearby government secondary schools.
University
Our Scholarship Fund supports students who are studying at the university. Most of them have been in our program since primary school. We are also able to offer support for selected students who attend the new Jesuit higher education college at Chiang Saen, Chiangrai, Thailand. This college program serves mainly the hill tribe communities that have limited access to education, healthcare, and other basic services.
Although primary and secondary education in Thailand is free (government-sponsored), there are many unseen expenses involved.
These families are so poor that many of them cannot afford the uniforms that children are required to wear, or the supplies, like pencils and notebooks, that they need in school, or live so far from school that they cannot afford the transport cost to reach the school. Moreover, food is in need as well. If food is not provided, then they will not go to school or will go to school hungry. At the tertiary level, our students could not proceed in their education without our support.
It currently costs approximately 2,000 baht to maintain one of the sponsored children in primary school for one year, 3,000 – 5,000 baht for a child in secondary school, and 6,000 baht and upwards for those sponsored at the university level. In almost all cases, without help from sponsors, these children would not be able to pursue their education.

Two Ways to Sponsor a Student
Individual Sponsorships
Through Individual Sponsorships you have the opportunity to sponsor one or more students on an annual basis. We share with you the name, photo, and a simple biography of the student so that you can know something about the specific student your contribution is helping. You are also given an opportunity to renew your sponsorship of “your” student in the following years if you wish.
General Donations
Contributions to the General Fund enable the SFSF committee to respond to the extraordinary and emergency needs of students that come up throughout the year. Examples might be the need to replace desks in the school room or to provide additional warm clothes during the cold season. The General Fund also helps cover administrative costs such as the fuel and transportation expenses of our village collaborators when they make visitations to students in the remote areas.
